This is the story of Kathia's birthday bag.
So I could not find the sugar skull fabric to make Kathia a birthday present, but I did find fabric with images of Mexican food. Kathia might be known to most for posting on Instagram and Facebook and abundance of pictures of her lunch and or out-of-doors excursions. So this print was fitting. As I sewed this bag, I softly chanted a blessing over the hands that will hold it, over the being who will adventure while using it, and for the fantastic finds that she will fill this bag with as she goes about her life. I recall all of the adventures that she and I have had in the decade plus that we've known each other. I recall from the very beginning the bond that we created, or rather was created for us, because of similar life experiences. I have to say that this part of my life is filled with what was grown from the seeds planted in the garden of my friendship with Kathia. From the people I've friended to the places I've been to the memories I've made and the moments that have inspired me. Kathia is woven all through. I will never forget how this woman held a bucket for me while I barfed in my house, in her car, and in the hospital. She wheeled me around in wheelchairs, made me laugh in the emergency room at the doctor's visible chonies through his scrubs, accompanied me on many journeys in Walmart where we have never met a stranger. You name it, Kathia's been there. Somebody should make a movie about our life together. Love you, Kathia. Happy Birthday.
